Sozopol is among the oldest Bulgarian cities. 2600 years ago Greek emigrants from Anatolia reached the peninsula, the bay, the islands, and decided to settle here. They founded Apollonia, a polis (city-state), model of ancient Greek democracy. Apollo, the God of arts, was the city protector. At that time Apollonia was the greatest and the richest city on the Black Sea coast, a commercial and art center. A variety of archeological finds were preserved from this period - coins, ceramic amphora, ancient anchors, etc.
Apollonia Arts Festival - Named in honour of Apollo, god of music and poetry, this annual ten-day arts festival is held in early September. A half-dozen venues around town stage nightly performances featuring a variety of music, theatre, dance, cinema and other events, attracting both national and international talent.
Nowadays Sozopol is a national and international holiday center attracting tourists from many countries including Great Britain, Germany, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic and France. The artistic atmosphere makes it one of the most favorite tourist destinations, giving visitors the opportunity to take part in the greatest Bulgarian cultural event – the Apollonia Festival of Arts.
A few kilometres further south is the Ropotamo river nature reserve; tour boats routinely ply the verdant-rich lower stretch of the river to the sea. |
