Location:
The town of Sandanski is situated in Southwestern Bulgaria.It is located 160 km south of Sofia on the E-79 motorway, in the sunniest part of Bulgaria.It lies in the foothills of the Pirin Mountains at an altitude of 224M.
The town has a reputation as a leading international spa and natural healing centre, due to its climate and the hot mineral springs.
Climate: The climate of Sandanski is unique. The average annual temperature (14,7°C) is the highest in Bulgaria. Winter is mild and short, and the autumn - long and warm. Relative air humidity is low (66 per cent), and annual sunshine is no less than 2,436 hours. This remarkable combination of balmy, health-giving weather and curative mineral waters makes Sandanski the perfect place for modern science-based climatotherapy, spa treatment, rehabilitation, primary and secondary prophylactics and recreation. It is an accepted venue for individuals recuperating for asthma related illness.

Rozhen monastery is one of the most important religious and cultural centres in Bulgaria; located 6 km east from the town of Melnik and 24 km from Sandanski. The mountain Slavyanka (Bozdag) to the south-west. The ridge of which forms the present border between Bulgaria and Greece.
The famous Sandy rocks of Melnik - There is no unilaterally accepted information on the establishment of the monastery. It is thought that its existence dates back to XIII-XIV century. Since its inception, the monastery is subordinated only to the Universal Patriarch, who is autonomous from the local bishop of the town of Melnik - a privilege granted only to the most significant monasteries in the Orthodox world.
The monastery is dedicated to the Mother of God. Today the religious monastery-holiday is celebrated on 8th September - the birthday of the Mother of God. It is believed that the name Rozhen comes from the Bulgarian word "rye".
In the vicinity is the most significant monument of culture of the Medieval and the Revival period - the historical architectural Melnik reserve. The town of Melnik, the smallest town in Bulgaria, is situated among the scenery of Earth Pyramids of Melnik on the south-western slopes of Pirin. Melnik and the nearby Rozhen monastery (founded in XIII -XIV century) have been conserved for a natural cultural and historical reserve.
