Location:
Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria, situated upon Maritsa River. Located 135 km from Sofia and 290 km from Bourgas.
Climate: The climate is temperate continental with cold winters and warm summers.
Sightseeing:
It is a picturesque town with many parks and gardens, and archaeological monuments.
One can find in Plovdiv ruins from the Thracian era, impressive evidence of the Roman time like the big amphitheatre, the stadium and the city gates. Plovdiv’s old part, called the Old Town offers a spacious ensemble of historical buildings from the Bulgarian National Revival Period of 17th and 18th centures.
The modern town is a trade and culture centre. It is a bunch of museums, churches, banks, hotels, cafes, restaurants, cinemas, shops, bars, bazaars, music clubs, casinos etc. Here rest the ruins of a Roman stadium and remnants of the Roman forum. You can also seen several mosques and original Turkish baths.
Classical concerts take place at the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra's concert hall, here in January the Winter festival of Symphony Music is held. The Opera is near the concert hall. The Mesalitinov Theater is the venue for classical drama, child shows, and modern theater.
The modern town is centre for trade and culture. 29 km south of Plovdiv, at the foot of Rhodope Mountains, is situated one of the oldest and richest Bulgarian monasteries - Bachkovo Monastery. Another beautiful place near Plovdiv is Assenova Krepost (the Fortress of Assen), that dates from as late as the 10th century.
The renowned modern international winter resort Pamporovo is close as well. One of the well known spa resorts situated not far from Plovdiv is Hissarya, famous for its 22 mineral springs and tourist facilities.
