Location:
Rhodopes Mountain is situated in the south-west part of Bulgaria. Magnificient pine forests, green meadows and mountain peaks bathed in sunlight – these are the incredible Rhodope Mountains you will never forget. Nor will you forget the Rhodope people, their hospitality and the delicious dishes they will make especially for you. Climate: Mild climate with mediterranean influence and clean air. Winters are mild, but with a lot of snow. The number of sunny days during the season from December to May is around 120.

Interesting places to visit are Assenova fortress near Assenovgrad, Batak, Shirika Luka, Narechenski baths, the town of Smolyan with numerous architectural monuments and museums and Bachkovo monastery – the custodian of the Bulgarian identity and spirit for centuries.
For those longing for peace, quietness and for recreation away from the bustle and hustle of the city, the famous spa resort of Velingrad, the resort of Tsigov Chark and Dospat offer marvelous opportunities for relaxation among the enchanting nature of the Rhodopes.
Kardjali rock formations impress with their whimsical shapes: Kamennite Gybi (The stone mushrooms), Skalen prozorets (Rock window), Vkamenena gora (Stone forest), Skalite na Ustra (Ustra's rocks), Gubata (The Mushroom), Lavat (The Lion), as well as Hladilnata peshtera (The Refrigerating cave) and a further 6 caves. The most popular of all is the rock formation called Kamennata svatba (The Stone wedding), situated at the village of Zimzelen.
The plant and animal diversity of the region is preserved in the reserve of 'Valchi dol', situated in the surroundings of Studen Kladenets dam and in the natural birch reserve of 'Belite brezi' ('The White Birches'). |
