Location:
Gabrovo is located in Central Northern Bulgaria. The municipal centre is situated in the northern part of the mid Balkan mountains, in the picturesque valley of Yantra river. It is 220 km away from the capital Sofia, 274 km from Varna and 234 from Bourgas. The nearest airport is 60 km. away in Gorna Oryahovitsa. Gabrovo has good transport connections with the major cities in the country.
Climate:
The climate of the region is temperate continental - cold winters with heavy snowfalls and comparatively warm summers. Falls are typically continental. Nothern and northwest winds prevail. The average annual temperatures are around 15°C. Snow holds up at the high mountainous parts for around 100 days.
Sightseeing:
Due to its clean mountain air, historical and ethnographical complexes Gabrovo has become an attractive tourist centre.
The region is suitable for mountain tourism, (cycling, hiking etc), recreation and rural tourism. The National Centre of Humour and Satire is located in Gabrovo. You can see in town a lot of different art and ethnographical exhibitions, collections of African ritual and carnival masks and accessories. Near Gabrovo is the 600-year-old village Bozhentsi - an architectural and historical reserve. Bozhentsi is located in a pretty valley, and all its authentic houses date back to The Renaissance period.
Bozhentsi is an excellent place for individual and family tourism. The visitors can see the unique expositions of the History Museum, Art Gallery and National Museum of Education. The National Museum of Education is located in the building of Aprilov Grammar School - the first non-clerical secondary school in Bulgaria.
A working museum of old Bulgarian crafts called Etara is 8 km from central Gabrovo. Master craftsmen fashion beautiful gold, silver, copper, leather and wooden articles right before your eyes from early morning until late at the night. The waft of freshly baked bread drifts across from an old bakery and a tiny coffee shop serves streaming sweet Turkish coffee cooked in a copper pot. Pastry-cook offers delicious home-made cookies and cakes. And around this - lovely old houses, flowers on the window sills, small shops with wooden shutters and gas lanterns on the street corners.
A day out in the area is an experience that is well worthy.
